The Idea of Image United to me was a pretty cool one, having all of the Image founders minus Jim Lee working on every page of the book was genius. Having Todd do the Inking for everything to me was also good. I mean, I am not a huge fan of his pencils. I prefer Greg Capullo 7 days a week over him. But, I do think he is a solid inker. I also know that as far as penciling goes, the mini series is nearly complete if not fully penciled by now. todd just has to much going on between Spawn, The Haunt, his Toy company in which he is fully hands on with, and his continuing court room Drama with Neil Gaiman that has been in full swing again for the last 3 months at least and which todd HAS to be present for. so in that sense he does have some legitimate obsticals. That said, I wish they would have just done the entire series before getting involved with releasing any of it. I have already cancelled this book from my limited pull list. I may consider buying a collected version if it ever gets to that point. Maybe one of the other founders could take over on the inking so that it can get closer to the finish line. Otherwise this can be chalked up to business as usual for Image. No kidding McFarlane said that this was possibility due to his "complicated life" and he also said that he told Kirkman, Liefeld, Larson, Silversti, and Valentino that this was a possibility! What did the others do hold a gun to his head? I mean he should have said he would ink a cover or a pin up and that is it. I think most of it was his ego. I think some artists do this because they want the money of different projects and some of them do it because of ego and some times shit happens. I think the smart comic creator (this isn't limited just to artists; writers have this problem too like Waren Ellis) is the one know his/her limitations and tries not to take more projects than they can do. McFarlane should have said he was too busy and been done with it. That would have been the classy thing to do. I remember when this comic was being hyped before it came out. It was like there was a buzz again for the original Image characters and creators. You can understand McFarlane wanting to be apart of it, but once the commitment became 6 issues, it should have been like "I'll do this much, but I can't do a bunch of things on this" and he could have done that and got a backup artist (Capulo?) to do the rest. As it is, he's held up the project for 6 months now going on longer, has killed the buzz and made Image look worse than it has in quite awhile. His attitude can't be like "I told them I live a busy life". That's just disrespectful to the project. You see, this is when a good artist would say "so and so is going to fill in for me because my personal life is too hectic to complete it" not "they should have known better". To be honest, the whole series looks like its disrespecting fans. Liefeld was right. Image United has been a complete embarrassment. I actually like that he said that. He was ridiculed so much for much of the same things that I actually like it that he got to say it to others. It's almost like the experience he had taught him a few things. It would be good karma if McFarlane suffered some of the same types of growing moments. Unfortunately, he's in a position of not needing to care at all. And therefore he is free to tell the world "They should have known better".

I think when working with a top notch writer Jim Lee has prodcued some really great work. True it's not going to sell a million copies, but his name will sell more books than some other creators. Jim Lee was always one of the better artists, but I'd like to see him draw in a different style. The whole Image style of art is waste to me. Deodato drew that way for them and it was just plain sad compared to what he can do. His South American work prior to working here was stunning. df1 I agree, Jim Lee was a pretty good artist before Image and while with Image, it never seemed like he was the one really shining. I agree since he's left and moved onto DC, he's done pretty solid work. I also agree that his Image look is something he needs to let go of. I'd be more curious what he can do now on his own rather than if he was actually a part of the Image United lineup today.

Its the only time I think I could ever agree with Liefeld.
As far as Jim Lee goes, his style will not change becasue that is what made him the legend that he is. He does however mix it up sometimes. We did this short story about a guy building a jet pack years ago and he inked it and colored it with watercolors and it really lookrd cool. also in the Batman HUSH storyline, he did all of the flashback scenes in straight watercolor.
The stuff looked really good. Most of his image style, and the continuation of that look s his continued use of Scott Williams as his go to inker. I like him, but the cross hatching doesn't fit my sesibilities.

I think it's time for him to move on from Scott Williams. It seems like he is keeping Jim Lee within the Image house style more than Jim Lee keeps himself in it. Lee just might be the most talented of the Image founders, but it seems he hasn't moved on from it. He might do fine sticking with the status quo as I'm sure he would, but it seems like he is capable of even more than that. It would be great to see Lee take it up another notch.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_UnitedPublication date November 2009
"Image United is a 2009 six-issue comic book limited series published by Image Comics, with two issues released so far....."
"Additional criticism has now fallen on the massive delays the project is suffering, while issues #1 and #2 shipped on time, issue #3 has yet to appear, it was originally scheduled for a January 2010 release, it has now been pushed back multiple times, and is now sitting at a May 19, 2010 release date, a full five months after issue #2.[13] However, as of August 3, 2010 it still has not been released yet....." This is an absolute embarrassment to the craft of comics. There is absolutely no reason why comic fans should put up with this shit. We are 1 month away from issue #1 being 1 year old and still no issue #3 as of yet. I'm beginning to doubt this will ever be finished. I can't imagine comic creators getting away with this 20+ years ago. And yet, DC with 70+ years of reliable delivery is on the brink of collapse. How is that even justified?

I feel that the artists started calling all the shots no matter how motivated or unmotivated they are. They don't even know how to motivate each other. In 1994, the Image creators were learning how to be a publisher on top of everything else they had to do. In 2010, there is no excuse to be that unprofessional.
