Yep, I was sad to hear this news, as well. I've been collecting Dave Stevens' covers on and off for years. Also, if it wasn't for his work, I would have never had heard of Bettie Page, who I am now a big fan of. He didn't have a whole lot of work out there for as long as he was in comics, from what I've read recently it's because he was so meticulous with his work, it took him forever to finish a page. Much too young to die.

Much too young to die. That's really how I started getting into him. I could see the quality in his work easily. To be honest, I would rather it be his way. Take forever and do an awesome job at it rather than having talent but rushing with sub-par efforts. If you cant make monthly books look good....do a project and pour your soul into it and make it kick ass. If you're not tied down to a monthly, you can make your work determine when you are done and not the deadline. I was really starting to get into this guys work. Such a shame. Yeah, it is young. I dont feel too far away from that myself.

One of my favorite Artists ever. His work was so clean and carried so much weight in it. The Rocketeer was a killer throwback book that was made into a really good if underrated film. There is a new book that has been released called The Art of Dave Stevens which is a must own for any fan of great comic art.
He will be missed.

In the past year or so I sat down and chatted with the publisher of the old Visions magazine. He was telling me stores about Dave Stevens. I was completely unaware that Brinke Stevens was Dave's ex-wife. I guess the name would be a big clue. I did meet Dave Stevens once. I bought a Rocketeer print from him. It was intended to be a gift for a guy, but he didn't want it. I've been meaning to scan it. I seem to recall Dave signing it, I won't know for sure until I dig it out from my closet. df1
