I'll start this out by saying this is going to sound racist as hell and I don't want it to, but it's going to sound that way just because of the subject matter. So I apologize if it sounds offensive. It's not my intent.
There used to be a time in music and video and tv when most genres was represented and you could find a side you like and stick with it. I can listen to anything except country and crying soul. I like some rap and hip hop. I think some songs kick ass. But I also think 85-90% of the stuff I hear is shit. Okay, I can listen to the ones I like and stick to my favorite genres, rock, heavy metal, classic rock, Alternative, etc. I've always been rock in my heart, but to me, these days, rock is dead. Or at least, what I hear now is all wussed out. No one jams anymore. Everyone is trying to sing pretty songs with a rock background but there is no jamming in it. Just melodic backgrounds to back up a wussed up voice. I hear so many Nickleback clones which I have to say was probably the downfall of rock. Since then, it seems rare to hear a band kick ass. Nickleback has a good band who can jam when they want, but they introduced the wussification of rock and the last 10 years has pretty much followed suit. I loved rock until about 2002-2003 and since then, it has been pure shit. The worst decade of rock since I've been alive and I think I can find kick ass songs all the way back to the 1950's easier than I can find a kick ass song from this last decade.
The problem I have, is Hip Hop and Rap and Dance/Club music like Pit Bull for instance, used to be on its own side and if you wanted to find it, it was there for you. I even have a few of my favorite tracks on my playlists. I do like some of it, but I'm just sick of it and how it is overtaking everything today.
For instance, you can't hardly watch a movie or tv show without hearing hip hop tracks in it. A lot of commercials have hip hop flowing in the background. And it seems to have such a huge influence. When my oldest son was younger, I turned him onto metal and he was all into bands like Metallica and such. Now, now he thinks he's Enimem or something. Hell, I like Enimem, but he's gone now pretty much. I mean, he thinks he's Jay Z. And it's not just him, all his friends and pretty much all the high schools are loaded with kids black and white just digging hip hop and dance/club music. Maybe it brings everyone together. I don't know. But all they seem to care about is the latest big time stars.
At my bank job, I worked alongside this 18 year old girl and she was white and pretty cute. She kept playing all these hip hop songs on her phone and it was getting me sick. She thought Nicki Minaj and other people who I think are talentless hacks. She thought they were gods.
The other girl was like 28 and she was ate up on it too. What makes matters worse is people I grew up with who were into rock and stuff growing up, I get around them and get in a car with them and they are thumping hip hop or similar dance influenced music at nauseam. They've been converted. Maybe because rock is dead. I don't listen to the radio at all these days because I hear so much shit on my former favorite stations. Maybe because there is no trend in rock anymore other than wussed out shit that is not making headway with today's generation. I really think this is the deadest, lamest era of rock I've ever experienced. Maybe that has it all to do with it. I don't know.
For the Super Bowl a big rumor last year was Van Halen was going to be the half time show. Instead, it ended up being Beyonce. Okay it wasn't bad but I don't think it was as great as everyone said it was either. During her montage, I heard like 2 or 3 songs I knew. The rest I had no idea. I'm just not hip. I think Eddie getting sick and having emergency surgery had a lot to do with them not doing it this year. And I don't think they are as good now as they were way back in my day. But let's just say Van Halen came on and kicked ass. I'll bet half the people if not more would have said it sucked. But Beyonce, hey, she could play a montage of music tracks and choreographed dancing and people will just say....OMG! That was the best Halftime Show EVER!!! It's feeling slanted. I almost feel like white people are afraid not to say they didn't like it or think it was all that.
The problem is, I feel like it is taking over everything. And to me most of it sucks. I feel like, and this is where I sound most racist and I'm sorry, but I feel like everyone is trying to sound black or act black or we have to have black rammed down our throats. It almost seems like Obama won his first election, everything black has just gone completely mainstream. I'm all for their cause, their music, their lifestyle. They have their side of things and I respect it. I just am sick of it being rammed down my throat every day. I can't turn the tv on anymore and watch a show without listening to commercials with hip hop in it. Or tv shows doing it. It almost feels like being a bible belter and it's being rammed down your throat. You resent that. Well, I'm resenting hip hop and dance/club music in that fashion.
I guess I'm just getting old and out of touch. I yearn to see bands I've seen before or never did see and I wanted to. I want to feel something heavy or at least rocking going on. My friend put up on Facebook that his wife bought him Rush tickets for the spring show. There you go! I want to see Megadeth and Faith No More. Two bands I've never seen but always wanted to. I want to go somewhere and get my ass kicked by rock like I did when I was young. I haven't experienced a good rock ass kicking in a long time.
I'm definitely getting just too old. I'm out of touch and not hip. I can handle that but I want to like what I want to like. I play bass and I want to have a new direction to get into. All I have now is the oldies (by today's standards).
I hope this didn't sound too racist.
