not a fan of Superman or any of his movies but I have to mention that I find the upcoming Man of Steel semi intriguing for one reason. Michael Shannon is playing General Zod.
I never knew who he was until I became a fan of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. He an eccentric prohibition officer who has such high convictions and standards that I often pictured his character as how I would imagine Defiant1 to be like since I have never met him. He plays the part so damn well and any scene he was in was almost always one of the coolest scenes of the show.
I don't know much about General Zob but the few clips I've seen of this movie it appears he is bringing the same style to this flick. That is the only reason I find this movie slightly intriguing.

[qte author=defiant1 board=hollywood thread=1334 post=11120 time=1385336238] not a fan of Superman or any of his movies but I have to mention that I find the upcoming Man of Steel semi intriguing for one reason. [img Are you watching it now? He seemed too preprogrammed to be anything like me. I'm really not high strung. The movie was okay, but certain things annoyed me. df1
I have only seen the trailer of the movie and only took note of it because I seen he was playing general Zod. I base my premonition of you strictly off his characterization of Nelson Van Alden on Boardwalk Empire. A series I have seen every episode of the first 3 seasons but I have been unable to watch this season which just ended last night. Me and my girlfriend plan on buying the 4th season when it comes out on dvd. I have loved that series and he is one of the stronger and more interesting characters out of a show full of strong and interesting characters. Shannon plays the role beautifully and over time, if you will allow me, some of his combined eccentric ways coupled with his strong convictions and self discipline make him a scene you pay attention to every time he comes on. To top it off his disciplined convictions put him in positions of authority and his leadership brings out fear in his underlings and to most of those that encounter him. Its these things that make me picture you when I watched his scenes. However without giving too much away, he has moments where circumstances overtake his overly powerful morally charged desciplined convictions and he has downright scary moments where his whole world changes and he has to stop the life he was living and start a new one from scratch more than once. He is truly no one to fuck with but some of his bad moments send him deeper into a world he started out trying to put behind bars. When I left off at the end of season 3, he is no longer a prohibition officer and instead he and his immigrant wife now make liquor for the mob and he was slowly be used as the mobs pawn while still maintaining his strong convictions, discipline and bad ass persona. To put it mildly, he's no dummy by a long shot and I'm dying to find out how his role shaped up this past season. For some reasons his high standards, discipline, smarts and authoritative personality over time reminded me of you. His very few moments of circumstance and how he handles things remind me of how you convey your thoughts to others. His moral high ground that he tries to live by along with his except nothing less attitude just made me think of how you won't compromise your views on quality no matter what anyone else says to you. I honestly have no idea how good or bad he portrays General Zod and I'm sure he isn't depicted quite the same as he is Nelson Van Alden, but I have to say when I seen it was him playing the part, I was automatically intrigued because he seems like a great choice to portray a villain. And btw, I know nothing about General Zod.

On the other hand, if someone did provoke me, I would clearly warn them ahead of time that they aren't making a wise decision. I make sure there are consequences. It might not be then. It might not be in a week. I'm in no hurry. I'm a Leo. I wait for the most opportune moment. There are some people who insult me and I compliment them. It really depends upon the situation. df1

It really depends upon the situation. df1
That was one of his famous derailing human moments where he comes unglued but to be honest, that guy had it coming. His previous human moment as a prohibition officer during prohibition causes him to flee and give up being an officer. He lands in a new town and becomes a door to door salesman selling irons. He is driven and wants to support his wife and children and works tirelessly trying to sell irons. During a sales contest put on by the boss he sells enough irons for the win but arives after the finishing time and loses because he was too late and the whole time he believes he is on time. The contest money was going to be spent on his family. Instead he has to go home and tell his wife he lost in shame. His wife loves him anyway. His coworkers ride him because when he gets off work he goes home to his family and doesn't hang with the other salesman at illegal bars and stuff. They see him as a stick in the mud but he don't give a fuck. They mess with him a few times and he keeps turning the other cheek. The scene you saw the other guy was pretending to be a customer and Van Alden was supposed to give his sales pitch so they could critique it constructively. Instead since there is a crowd the other guy plays up the fact he is acting like a woman and insults his manhood in front of the crowd much to the laughter of all his coworkers who think he is a stick in the mud. The laughter is too much and he loses it. Needless to say, that was his last moment as an iron salesman.

The director's summary of one season (not sure which) is more interesting than any footage I saw. Overall, I'm not real excited about period pieces that are set in a period before I was born. Victorian settings are my least favorite. I feel that movies over-glamorize the past.
Zod was played pretty much the same as the irate version of Nelson Van Alden, not the frustrated & timid version. Krypton has a more complicated structure presented in this movie. There was a lot of history changed for this movie and I didn't like that. Zod was probably the only character that I thought was cast well.

If you like Michael Shannon, You should check him out in The Iceman. He plays a real life Hitman who worked for the mob, unbeknownst to his family. good flick and it is on DVD. As for man of steel, It is a pretty good movie, but it is divisive. There were a number of people that claimed snyder was giving them flashbacks of 9/11 and that Superman was not saving people or working for the daily planet. The thing these people failed to realize, is that this is the first time that Kal El Ever used his powers or even gets into a fight, and he ends up fighting a whole bunch of people that are not only just as strong as him, but are also combat trained. IMO, the violence in this was no different than Avengers or Pacific Rim. Both of which had massive destruction. MOS was very realisti looking though.
Regarding what Defiant mentioned about Krypton, I actually liked the changes. It gave more sense to why Zod was the way he was and what his problem with Kal was. I will spoil it here since it really doesn't ruin the film.
On Krypton, everyone is born through genetic engineering. They are created with specific purposes and the drive to carry that purpose out. Jor El was a Scientist. That is his purpose. Zod, and all of the other Soldier class, were bred with the sole purpose of protecting Krypton and its people. By any means neccesary. Jor El, before sending Kal to earth, stole the genetic matrix which contains all of the DNA to create generations of people on Krypton. The reason he hates Kal, is because he see's him as an abomination, since he is the product of a sexual union. Something that has not happened on Krypton in over 500 years.
This is the first Superman film where he actually hits someone. and he hits the hell out of them. This movie had consequences, unlike the other Superman movies. I like Henry Cavil. He is a good Superman. I like Russel Crow as Jor El and Amy Adams was good as lois, even though her hair was not black. Actually, everyone was good in their roles. The movie did not have any of the nostalgic Americana feel that the original had, but that is okay. You may like it. You may hate it. But, it is a good film.

One of my favorite aspects of the show is every detail is spot on for the day and ages right down to the music being played and every ornament or utility being used. If it was cheesy about it, it wouldn't work. But they make you feel like it is 1923. Anyway can't make you wanna try it. Just feel Shannon would make a great villain.

The thing that irritates me is that period pieces always glorify previous days. They don't mention that people only took baths once a week and and wore the same clothes everyday. Work was harder and it took longer to get the same jobs done. They are always shown in fluffy white shirts. People have time to talk endlessly and in most period pieces they only work 2% of the time while socializing 98% of the time. I rarely watch TV at all. I'm tired of police shows and guns being the main focus of everything we watch on TV and in the movies. I'm tired of lawyer shows and medical shows that just pluck story ideas out of the news headlines to rehash things that have happened already with some unlikely new twist. I'm tired of game shows. I'm tired of the news with more teasers than content. If they tease me on a story I want to watch and then go to a commercial, I will shut off the TV. I got very irritated watching a People's Court episode because they give you a teaser and then they come back and you have to watch the exact same scene over again. I watch the first episode of the Agents of SHIELD show and the writing was horribly cheesy. I watched an episode of Blacklist as James Spader gets to stand in a bulletproof cell and talk endlessly to a guy who wants to kill him. I'm tired of the writing formulas. I'm tired of situation comedies where people stand around and pretending to be doing something until the writer want them to interject something. How many times have we seen two characters having a heated discussion in a home and at the conclusion one says "I'll see myself out." I've never had anyone say that to me in a conversation. .If two people are angry, you usually follow them to the door and make sure they leave without messing with something you own. I'm just tired of most TV/Movie writing in general. df1

The majority of television is worthless. There are exceptions. Some are tied to particular channels. Like HBO and AMC and FX. They are the only ones that consistently create good Television. Breaking Bad has really had an effect on TV and we will be seeing that more and more in the next couple of years.
