The majority of television is worthless. There are exceptions. Some are tied to particular channels. Like HBO and AMC and FX. They are the only ones that consistently create good Television. Breaking Bad has really had an effect on TV and we will be seeing that more and more in the next couple of years. You still get car crashes with no aftermath on their driving record or dealing with an insurance company for days. I knew a girl who wouldn't watch romantic comedies because they were too idealistic and the couple always ended up stronger and better for their ordeals. It made reality more depressing for her. I've seen one episode of breaking bad. I thought it was stupid. The main star will always be Malcomb's dad to me. Nothing he does will ever purge that memory from my mind. He was in the remake of Total Recall and he was the worst casting choice I could ever imagine. Back on topic... df1

The show takes place in 1923 mainly at Atlantic City, NJ but also shows Chicago and New York frequently during prohibition. One of my favorite aspects of the show is every detail is spot on for the day and ages right down to the music being played and every ornament or utility being used. If it was cheesy about it, it wouldn't work. But they make you feel like it is 1923. Anyway can't make you wanna try it. Just feel Shannon would make a great villain. The thing that irritates me is that period pieces always glorify previous days. They don't mention that people only took baths once a week and and wore the same clothes everyday. Work was harder and it took longer to get the same jobs done. They are always shown in fluffy white shirts. People have time to talk endlessly and in most period pieces they only work 2% of the time while socializing 98% of the time. I rarely watch TV at all. I'm tired of police shows and guns being the main focus of everything we watch on TV and in the movies. I'm tired of lawyer shows and medical shows that just pluck story ideas out of the news headlines to rehash things that have happened already with some unlikely new twist. I'm tired of game shows. I'm tired of the news with more teasers than content. If they tease me on a story I want to watch and then go to a commercial, I will shut off the TV. I got very irritated watching a People's Court episode because they give you a teaser and then they come back and you have to watch the exact same scene over again. I watch the first episode of the Agents of SHIELD show and the writing was horribly cheesy. I watched an episode of Blacklist as James Spader gets to stand in a bulletproof cell and talk endlessly to a guy who wants to kill him. I'm tired of the writing formulas. I'm tired of situation comedies where people stand around and pretending to be doing something until the writer want them to interject something. How many times have we seen two characters having a heated discussion in a home and at the conclusion one says "I'll see myself out." I've never had anyone say that to me in a conversation. .If two people are angry, you usually follow them to the door and make sure they leave without messing with something you own. I'm just tired of most TV/Movie writing in general. df1 You sound like me when it comes to tv. I cannot stand cop, hospital, fire and lawyer shows. I hate when tv always has to have a gun or solve a murder. There are so many professions that could be interesting but yet those are the ones that have all the tv time. I hardly watch tv at all. I must confess I like sports so I watch that and I like shows I can learn something off of which is rare and an occasional comedy but even most of those are too stupid or not funny enough to watch. I don't even go to the movies. The last movie I went to was the Watchmen when it came out. That should give you an idea of how much I don't like going to movies. Typically I catch them later on tv or dvd if I ever wanted to see it in the first place. I have a 50 inch plasma and a great home theater system. I prefer to see it in my home rather than be annoyed by people near me in a theater being rude. That all being said, I know better than to try and convince you to try watching Boardwalk Empire. I wouldn't dare. If you watched one episode by itself you would probably be bored. One reason I love it is it is in sequential form like comic books. I actually started watching towards the end of the second season and I was intrigued. I set my dvr to record all episodes and luckily it showed what dates they originally aired, so I watched from the beginnng and didn't stop until I had watched the whole 3 seasons which was fantastic. The 4th season started in September but by then I had lost my satellite. So as soon as it comes out on dvd, we are getting it. It doesn't glorify the past. The poor are poor and have it bad and things are tough and people struggle. The main character is a rich mobster and you clearly see the class differences. Racism is clearly shown as well. And I love the show for the combo of spot on sets right down to the last detail, the characters are extremely interesting and main lead star characters who you love to watch get killed off. I love mobster type movies but its not overbearing like the Sopranos or Goodfellas. These are real historical characters like Al Capone, Mia Lansky, Lucky Lucianno and so on. Sure they take creative liberties with the characters, they also loosely what historically happened to the characters. And the vast array of characters are all interesting and extremely well played. I hate tv much like you do and again I know better than to try and convince you to watch anything because it just isn't worth my time. However with that being said I wouldn't insult your high standards either by recommending something I know you would easily pick apart and be bored with so many things. Michael Shannon is only one of easily a dozen great reaccuring characters on this show. He is impecable as Nelson Van Alden. He is why I thought Man of Steel might be promising. Just because I like him and he reminds me of you when I watch Boardwalk Empire. I know you'll probably never watch it before I ever typed a sentence. But coming from someone who hates tv almost as much as you do. It would be one of the only shows I would even talk to you about without insulting your high standards. Its a damn good show for all the right reasons in my humble opinion.

If I watched it, I might not mind it. I'm just out of the habit of watching TV at all. I've been planning on giving away all but a few of my DVD's. I had a TV in my room for a decade that I never turned on. I bought a 32" TV that I only use as a computer monitor.

One episode of Braking bad will not tell you anything. Please do not argue that point. It is serialized television, therefore it requires time to unfold. But, by Episode 2 you will be hooked. He may be Malcolms dad in your mind, but after about 1 season of BB, you will only see him as Heisenberg. That show delivers on so many fronts that it is like crack.
Boardwalk Empire is on my list to watch. I love mob shows.
