I know its old as hell but I finally just seen Hancock on DVD for the first time tonight. I didn't much care for how it ended and I thought some of the special effects looked a little fake or cheesy, especially in the beginning. But overall I thought it was pretty damn good and better than I thought it would be and I have to say it beats a lot of iconic comic book movies with well established legendary super heroes.
I find a lot of comic movies trying too hard to be something smarter than what it is and often over complicates things or over dramatizes itself and super heroes come off as prententious dicks or its dripping with too much nerdom far beyond what happens in the pages of a good comic.
What I appreciated about Hancock was the simplicity of the story and the characters seemed real and easily likeable instead of blathering off overly scientific talk that only a geek could enjoy. The story was easy to follow and I actually cared to continue watching instead of having my mind wonder off to something else that had nothing to do with the movie. Hancock just seemed fun to watch and moved at a great pace. It was almost the perfect anticomicbook movie beating up comic movies by doing it better than most comic movies do it themselves. All the while not losing the seriousness of it while remaining fun to watch. I honest enjoyed this better than most comic movies I've seen. Not all of them, but most. It reminded me of how much fun comics used to be and how fun and promising and show the potential of comics when handled correctly as compared to how most comics today suck and most comic movies don't remind me of how fun the comics were or why i should care to watch or in comics today, continue reading. I feel comic movies would do well to take a page or two from Hancock and get off of its fanboyish high horse which just plain bores me to tears.
It wasn't a perfect movie but I enjoyed watching it.
