You know...I've thought of this before. And the thought just struck me again. With all the different TV channels out there on Cable and Satellite and with Comics struggling with the younger kids and maybe dying a slow death....why hasnt there ever (that I know of) been an effort to start a Comic Book TV channel.
Now I think a lot of people would believe it would just have a bunch of Super-hero cartoons and Im not opposed to it having that. But, in my dream comic-book channel, cartoons would be a very small portion of it. Im thinking it could deal with every aspect of comics....
The companies, the comics. Hey you could have shows on comics of today and yesterday. The Silver Age show, etc. Whats hot now. You could have coverage of the biggest conventions. San Diego, Chicago, NY, Philadelphia. You could have a news show like ESPN Sports Center, except it would be news about nothing but comic book related info. You could have interview shows and biographies on artists and writers. Go behind the scenes in the board rooms and the decision making processes. Hollywood entertain news. Upcoming movies and who is going to play what character. You could have a Speculation show, a market watch show and on and on and on....And yes, you could have cartoons too.
I know, I know...it wouldnt appeal to a mass audience so no company would back it. Well, maybe so. But I also see things on cable and satellite that seems to appeal to very small audiences as well and yet it tends to grow if given exposure. This could be one of those channels hidden away in the lineup. Channel 731 is you have Digital Cable or Satellite. Not a stand out slot. A back ground slot. But put it up there and see if the fans tune in. And if they do tune in, maybe advertisers would start advertising and maybe the channel could grow. And if it grows and more viewers get drawn in, maybe the comic book medium as we know it gets a shot in the arm. Perhaps even turning on kids today who may not otherwise ever get into comics.
I know its a pipe dream. But its one Ive had for many years now. I just think with the right backing, it could be done. It doesnt have to be large to start...it just needs a good lineup of shows on day after day after day. There is enough subjects there in my opinion that it wouldnt run out of material. There is enough comic related material in this world that this could happen if run by the right people.
So tell me Im wrong and go back to my daydreams. But me personally, I always wonder why someone will not try it.

Well, I actually got to watch 3 out of 4 of the videos. Im not going to watch the 4th that wants iTunes to play it. I actually enjoyed Pulp Secrets. The 2nd one I didnt like at all and the 3rd I could have liked if it wasnt for those 2 dudes at the end acting so nerdy.
These are good examples, but Im dreaming bigger than this. Im dreaming Hollywood type MTV, VH1 production values. Not camcorders and video mixers. A true life broadcasting station with a few million dollars pumped into it. I know, this aint going to happen and this is pipe dream material. So, you can slam me all you want here and be perfectly right. Im not arguing with you. I agree. What is out there now wouldnt be beneficial in most cases. But, I think this is small time compared to what I dream and invision.
Have you ever seen Crumb? That could be like a feature documentary. Well, Id like to see that on a lot of artists and writers personally. And yeah, comics generally attract nerds. But I wouldnt want bona fide nerds hosting my shows. How about some real attractive went to college broadcast types who actually could pull off a professional broadcast with attractive ladies (and dudes for the ladies watching) doing the news shows. Not some dude dressed up in a Spider-Man t-shirt looking like he has a real tough time scoring dates. Something like a E! broadcast or an Entertainment Tonight type of Anchormen and Women.
Maybe one night a week or more you could have Comic Movies on like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man (the list goes on) Main Features. Of course you would have to interview nerds quite often. But please, dont let the nerds run the thing. I mean a couple for a few different shows....okay. But not every show being run by them. Im talking Hollywood production and backing here. Real Money, Real Anchor-men and women. Real TV shows. Real Moves and Cartoons. Almost a new breed of celebrity. Maybe even a few reality shows. Like a reality show on a Comic Store owner. Or a convention dealer. (Hey 30 minutes to 1 hr a week show follow these people around for their trials and conquests in life).
The point is C....You are damn right. It probably doesnt have a shot in hell and isnt a good investment and so on and so forth. You'll win that argument with me every time. I cannot debate it.
But, just go into a dream mode a bit and dream big. Just take the "What if" stance a moment and say it can be done. I think the only limitation is imagination.

A comic channel would be cool. And as for the nerds, well they are your target audience so you would have to chatter to them from time to time. I thought G-Force, the gaming channel, did a damn fine job with hot nerdy chick host before they got bought out by some mega company that now plays 24/7 Star Trek. However, comic fans are rated somewhere in the 250,000 numbers. Perhaps a million? That's about cartoon network numbers IF everyone were to watch the channel (and most probably wouldn't even know or have cable access). So broaden your target audience just a bit more. What makes San Diego a mecha of geekdom? Takes bits and pieces of that and you should have a well rounded geeky channel with lots of fans. And by the way... hot nerdy chick reporters are the only way to keep the ratings up. As for me, well I'd make my weekly collectible investing show (think CNN stocks) available exclusively to your network.

That's it, dream with me a bit here! Im not saying we have to stamp nerds out of the show. That CAN'T happen. You have to talk to them because they are the main target audience. And we can even have them run a couple of shows. But, I would prefer they run a few and not the majority. Im thinking of an E! or VH1 style channel where the beautiful people run the news and talk show type shows. They can be talking to the nerds, but they wouldnt be nerds themselves. They could be "nerd desires" Like..."Did you see that anchorgirl on Comicbook Channel News?.....she's hot!" Im even for some nerdy girls who look hot. Ive actually seen a few in my day. It CAN happen. Reminds me of my Uncle when we got into an argument about women and I told him he dated Ugly chicks...his reply was... "Hey!!! Ugly chicks need loving too!" Okay, so we get a hot looking nerdy girl that drives the comic nerd audience nuts. But, it cant just be about sex and sexy girls. That will never work. It has to be about comics. All comics, all the time! Or at least comic related. We could expand as far out as Yu-gi-oh stuff and Toys and so on. Things you might see at any convention or comic store. But above all else, it has to be about the comics. Comic books is the #1 theme. Im serious. I know this is pipe dream material beyond belief. But, I think there is PLENTY of material out there to make a comic book channel. I really do. Stop dreaming of how it wouldnt work and put in what you think it would need to work. What would your dream comic book channel have???

That's it, dream with me a bit here! I'm sorry. I just keep waking up. When I used to chat with the cute girl at the LCS, it wasn't about comics. cfs

When I used to chat with the cute girl at the LCS, it wasn't about comics. cfs If she's working at a comic store then why not chat about comics? Unless she really wasn't into comics at all and was working at the store for money. Mistake nerds make when talking to a comic book chick is to NOT talk about comics. Tease her about the books she reads or how many greesy nerds have hit on her in the past. Tell her she can't have you cause she's a comic nerd...ect. But have fun talking with her about comics at least once in a while...sheesh.

But have fun talking with her about comics at least once in a while...sheesh. She has no interest in comics and most of what we did talk about were the geeks and scary customers that would come in while she was alone. Either that or about TV, Pop Culture or the like. She worked there because the owners let her run things her way and the job was easy. I was one of the customers she liked to chat with because in her words "I shut people up." They'd want to ramble about some stuff she didn't want to talk about and I'd say one sentence and they'd shut up. She told me once "I'm not even sure if you know you are doing it!" I replied "Oh no! I know I'm shutting them up. I want them to shut up too." She smiled. I told one of my friends that I was one of her favorite customers. She corrected me and told him I was one of her favorite people. I don't really know what that means, but we got along fine. Randy Queen used to be one of her customers. I'd give her hell because Dark Chylde lokks just like her younger self on some covers. I'd pull a cover up with Dark Chylde on it and say "Damn, Randy Queen must have imagined you naked a lot." She'd look like she wanted to choke me and then I'd laugh about it. cfs
