Well the 2009 March Madness of College Basket Ball is over and see if the Tournament Challenge.
As for the Comic Crack challenge, I only had 1 competitor. And I lost. Believe it or not, I was winning all the way until the final 4. But I had Villanova over UNC and he had UNC winning the tournament, which they did. So when you get to the final 8, that's where all the big points come in.
My best bracket was this one.
My best bracket
Which was NOT part of the Comic Crack Challenge.
In the 1st round of 10, I had a horrible start, losing 10 out of 32. But these were worth 10 points each. So I only had 220 out of a possible 320 points. Which is kinda so-so.
Well, the thing about the 1st round is 2 of my losers I had winning in the 2nd round, so those 2 were automatic loses in the 2nd round, which is now worth 20 points. So out of the 16 games in round 2, I could only possibly win 14. Guess what? I won all 14!!!! So in round 2 I gained 280 points. Suddenly I was moving up.
Round 3 had 8 games worth 40 points each. The winners of each of these games determined the final 8 teams in the tournament. These 8 games played over the course of 2 days. 4 games on each day. On the 1st day, I once again was perfect!!! So now I was basically perfect every game except the 1st round.
The 2nd day had 4 more games. When the day started, this is when I was beating 98.2% of the country. I began thinking I might have a shot if I could get through the 2nd day perfect. This is where the cookie started to crumble. With only 11 games left in the tournament total, I peaked. I would go on to win 3 out of 4 the 2nd day. Which means I was 7 out of 8 during the 3rd round (sweet sixteen). Which is pretty awesome really. So now out of the final 8 teams alive I had 7 of them in my bracket. I finished round 3 with another 280 points. I was still in the 94% bracket at that point. I was still playing for respectability.
In round 4 I could only possibly get 3 out of the 4 correct. The 1 team I had that lost in the 7 out of 8, I had winning the next round too. So that wasn't possible. Thus I could only win 3 out of 4. This is where my cookie totally crumbles and I only win 1 of the 3 possible. So I only have 1 team in the final 4. Villanova. So I only gain 80 points in round 4.
The good thing is I have Villanova winning it all. So I can still get 160 if they win round 5. And another 320 if they win the championship game. So I can still gain another 480 points.
Well, I gained zero the rest of the way. Villanova didn't show up against UNC and I was done.
So there you see it fellas. I got beat in my own tournament by the only person who dared to play me. So I'm not that good. But at the same time, with 11 games left to go I had a bracket that was beating 98.2% of the country. And yes, it was total luck! And it was just the tiny bit of knowledge I did have being put to use. I don't watch hardly any college basketball, but I read the headlines, just not the stories.
I honestly had a blast doing this. I hope next year some of you guys will fill out a bracket just for the hell of it. What can it hurt? I was literally 11 lucky games away from a shot at $10,000. I really felt like I could have been in the mix if a few games fell a different way. But, winning this is like winning the lottery. There was almost 5 million entries.
So how well did my BEST do?
Only good enough to beat 52% of the country. So I sucked at it in the end. But dammit, it was all computerized and easy to follow. And it was fun!
I hope you guys will just say fuck it, and fill one out next year.
