Who knows what is going on with Spider-Man? I've read a lot of the Amazing Spider-Man issues since Brand New Day happened. There have been two new villains introduced to Spider-Man since Brand New Day I really like. (Others have been introduced that are just okay in my book.) The first is Menace, the second Anti-Venom. Menace is a cool-looking character on a goblin-glider. A subplot had been running throughout Amazing Spider-Man since Menace was introduced in Amazing Spider-Man 549 involving the new villain and who it really is, but Menace's true identity was just revealed last month. The other new Spider-Man villain I really like is Anti-Venom. It was revealed Anti-Venom is Eddie Brock right away, so no such suspense there. Possibly the best arch since Brand New Day began, New Ways To Die, written by Dan Slott, featured the premiere of Anti-Venom. Get ready to duck, as the current Spider-Man direction is extremely polarizing, and stones could fly regarding this post!

Thank you for the post starbrand and this was exactly the kind of post I was looking for when I created this area. Its an area I would to see become an on going thread area so as when new developments arise, they can be pointed out in these areas as a way for others to know what direction the book is headed in.
As far as how worthwhile it will truly turn out to be remains to be seen and I know it is a very long time before it will reach a point of being an area to be proud of because it is going to take a long time for it to fill in with people chiming in about the major characters and storylines. However, if it does fill in, I think this area has tremendous growth potential and it's an area I feel can be great with the proper member participation.
As for my extremely limited take on Spider-man, I haven't been trying to read Spider-man even when I was back into comics last year. I didn't buy 1 issue of ASM and that amazes me because it was always a book I would rather enjoy picking up from time to time.
The reason I don't is ASM has just gotten WWWAAAYYYY too complicated. I don't even pretend to understand what is going on with all the clone storylines and Peter being married or not married and so on. I just feel this comic has take the wrong turn somewhere and needs to find it's way back. The beauty in Spider-man to me was always the simplicity of it. Peter Parker works at the newspaper and takes pictures fighting as Spiderman. Falls in love and marries Mary Jane. Looks after Aunt May. Has numerous cool villains but outfoxes them all. Has had tragic events shape who he is including Uncle Ben, Captain Stacy and Gwen Stacy.
It all was easy to follow for so long and it was a great ride and then it just got all thrown in a washing machine and nothing makes sense anymore. I think they ruined this character and cleaning up the mess has not been easy. So, I think for me to get back into Spider-Man, he needs to go back to being the easy to follow and understand character he always has been and I don't see that happening. But I hope it is in the process of eventually getting back to it. But I really don't know because I haven't been very interested in Spider-Man in about 15 years.

I think my opinion on the new direction of Spider-Man comes from the fact that I (any many my age, I would imagine) don't KNOW this Spider-Man.
They wanted to go "back to basics" so to speak... but, all the depth and character development that they removed, was the entire essence to "my generation's" Spidey.
I dropped the title... errrr, probably mid summer of 2008. I wasn't really digging the stories, and the overwhelming snark coming from the "brain-trust" really left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
I enjoyed Ultimate Spider-Man... but, I hear even THAT universe is getting (or has gotten) overhauled.
For some interesting reading, google "Life of Reilly" and you should be able to find an AWESOME resource on the Clone Saga. Very candid and entertaining read. I believe it's 31 chapters of the thought process put into what could have been a great arc.
