It seems like it would be a given that Superior Comics would separate themselves from the pack and catch the collecting world by storm and be the envy of the comic world, but I actually wonder if such a thing happened today, would it truly work long term? I mean, lets face it....the comics world today is very fickle. In fact, I'd almost reckon it's too fickle. Things get hot in comics too fast and hard and once they do become hot, they fizzle out and become red headed step children just as quick. Often forgotten and in dumpsters 6 months later. Even those that do not end up in the dumpsters just don't seem to have the pull or following or growing readership they had at or just after launch. The heat and luster of the shine seem to be gone and so too with it, is the thrill.
Often times, these are just comics having their weaknesses exposed and it finally catches up to them. They really aren't that special and they never really were. Its like an infatuation with a woman you think is hot and finally get up with her and wear her out like you lusted so hard for, and then ultimately you start deciding, she wasn't as hot as you originally thought she was and to be honest, you're looking for a way to dump the girl because she wasn't the bang you thought she'd be.
Well, I kinda got to wondering tonight if maybe we've just become too used to that pattern of new comics coming out in over abundance that even when we meet with superior product, are we just likely to let it go to the wayside because 3-6 months later our appetites for something else just naturally take over?
I mean, if we got what we were looking for in new comics, would we as the collective body of comic collectors....would we even know it if it hit us? Would we support it beyond 3-6 months? Would we stick with it as long as it's creative energies were this superior or would we just let it rot away because we are too predisposed to feel like we need to look elsewhere even when the thing we want the most from comics is right in front of our face?
I personally am beginning to feel like we are almost our own worst enemy when it comes to buying comics. I've always realized that when it came to poor or inferior comics which have been hyped for no good reason. A lot of us end up buying into the hype and check it out, which serves to make the book just a bit hotter than it ever should have been. And we come only to realize that the book is not worth the hype and so we drop it.
But are we so inclined to feel this way that we wouldn't know a good product if it dropped right in our laps? Maybe we would think "this is hype" for those first few moments, but would it hold our interest beyond 6 months? Could it dominate the industry the way a certain comic used to be able to do before? Somehow I doubt it.
I'm saying if something of the quality of a game changer and a revolution much like the original Pre-Unity Valiants happened to make its way onto the scene with the same hype, values and superior workmanship, would we the buying public stick with it? As much as I'd like to think we would, I almost feel like we've got it backwards.....
We back things we never should have in the first place and longer than we should have even though we never had any good thoughts about them as long as we were buying....AND....
We don't back products to the degree that we could make a winner out of it and back it month by month to levels of a new revolution because we just don't stick to anything that is good anymore. Sometimes we will stick with the dogs longer than the winners
I'm feeling like as bad as I think creators, publishers and the media treats us when it comes to product, we ourselves as the buying public don't make it easy for the companies to have guidance from us. We treat the good and the bad almost the same....give it a few months and then look for something else.
As much as the creative side is the problem, we as fans are maybe even more of the problem. Because we often don't back what is superior even when we have it in our hands.
