I have ordered the Action Heroes (vol 2) HC as well to give me a sturdy reading copy. I'm not familiar with that, is that a Charlton Publication? A DC Archives reprint of the Charlton material. There are two collections: Volume 1Volume 2I have read my first two books - Blue Beetle 3 and 5. Wow. The printing is shoddy, but the Ditko work is exquisite and the stories hold up well, with strong variation in storytelling given the era (the earlier issue often employing 7-9 panels a page, the latter a little fewer, as well as really great art including some fantastic use of perspective in the acrobatic sequences). The Question back-ups are great, as I first encountered the character through CoIE and then later his own title. There is even a nod towards Ditko's own existentialist thinking in the latter issue, predating the likes of Gerard Jones, Grant Morrison and others by a good couple of decades. Fantastic stuff, that surprisingly was well-continued in the early DC material fetauring these characters. I'll be hitting the issues of Judomatser I have assembled next.

Those look like some very nice books but the prices are Not sure I could shell out that kind of money for a Hard Cover reprint book. Im stingy when it comes to comic money. I would probably rather pay that price for a strong comic instead. I will say, those do like some cool books though and I can attest that the books you refer to are very strong. Ditko looked awesome in some of those books you mentioned.

Received the vol. 2 hardcover the other day, so I look forward to reading that. In the meantime I am reading the (incomplete) run of Judomaster I have assembled (which is a couple of issues or so short). The Frank McLaughlin art stands up pretty well, even if the printing is pretty terrible. The serial nature of the series surprised me - being an artefact of the sixties I expected something more episodic, so that was a refereshing revelation. After this I will plow through the hardcover volume, giving me time to look at completing my Blue Beetle and Judomaster issues (the Blue Beetle stories are in the hardcover) and to pick up the Fightin' 5 issues with Peacemaker, allowing me to tackle Peacemaker from start to finish since i have a complete set of the Peacemaker books..
Good stuff.

Ebay user Charltonjohn has been outbidding me on some of the gag magazines I've been collecting. I made him pay an extra $30 a week or so ago and an extra $1 last week. Seems stupid to pay extra when some of the books sell for $5 without us trying to outbid each other. I'm going to bid low on future auctions and catch any he misses. If something a little better comes up, I won't show him any mercy. He'll either pay through the teeth or I'll take it.

Wow! Price wars on obscure Charlton books. Who would have thunk it? I still havent been able to find anything I want to buy lately on ebay. I havent made an ebay purchase in like 10 months. But I have slacked off in recent months. Well, for the past 1-2 weeks Ive been looking real hard at the auctions and just not finding anything I want to put cash down on. I keep wishing something will show itself. But it doesnt. I wouldnt mind buying some kind of exceptional Charlton. I think when I go to Charlotte, I am going to look for a few. I got a couple exceptional ones there last year. But also...not many dealers had much. Ive probably got about just as much as what the most well stocked Charlton dealer had. Now if I can just double - quadruple that...Id think I really have something of note.

I've been kind of Jonesing to pick up a few nice Charltons lately. I think the last Charlton I picked up that I was ecstatic about was my Silver Age Blue Beetle #1 which I picked up for $1 and about shit my pants. I don't actually need anything major, I just need to add to it. It's just one goal of mine to have one of the best Charlton collections around when people see it because so few dealers or collectors seem to have many. Its not a lofty goal to meet. If you can gather about 2 boxes, you are well on your way to having an awesome Charlton collection.

I have 2 very nice #1's. I mean for Charlton's that is. Probably in the VF+ range on both of them. I'm extremely happy with them because very few of my Charlton's stand up to that condition. That being said, this here is just exceptional. I would really love to have that. And yes, I would be damn proud to own it. If I ever get back to being able to collect again, I would go hard after my Charltons. They gave a unique joy for some reason. I still think they are like the red-headed step child of older comics. I remember I never bought any when I was young. My mom got me a couple of 3 packs that had Charlton's in them and I remember liking a few I had. I even had some Moderns from that. But I never personally bought any. Then they disappeared and I noticed how few dealers had of these books. It was rare to find anyone with 1 box. And typically they were ratty copies. It's almost made it the draw. Anything in VG+ or better to me is desirable. What other comic collection can I say that about? I've seen tons more in worse condition than that. Whenever I get something that hits VF or better, its like an amazing thing. This 9.8 here is impeccable. You often wonder if Charltons truly had NM books on their best days or date of births. Perhaps 9.2's in most cases were as best as they ever were. I don't know. I do know anything 9.8 by them has to be rare. If I could buy this, I would.
