Whats the word here? When I 1st heard that Virgin was coming to comics, I didnt think they would be around very long, but they seem to be surviving rather well, although I cannot think of any bona fide hit. They seem to be a consistent small time player.
Me personally? Well, I dont really have anything by them. One thing I dont like about them is their covers seem to be the standard...stand there and look like a model or something type of covers, which I cannot stand. But otherwise, they look well made to me. My wife on the other hand is attracted to their covers, so whenever possible, she has been picking a copy or 2 up.
So there is the question, are they just pretty? Or do they have substance?

No opinion. They interested me, but the catered towards a hot babe look and I've got enough of hat crap which I never read.

I have been reading Virgin since the inception and the mainstay books of Sadhu, Rayaman, Gamekeeper and Snakewoman don't fit this generalisation. Nor did the Virulents one-shot, not I imagine Dan Dare. I haven't read Walk In yet, but I daresay that isn't a 'hot babe' book. If you care to dispute this, cfs, then feel free, with evidence rather than sweeping generalisation, please. Unless of course the basis for your comment isn't an informed one from not reading the books.

The books look nice. Too pretty in a way. The covers give you no idea what the content will be. In that sense they don't entice me in any way whatsoever so I feel no sense of loss by leaving it to sit on the shelf. cfs

The covers I've seen are static and don't inspire me to buy the books. When I look at the cover, as far as I'm concerned that is what they are selling. Snake Woman is just a bunch of covers featuring a pretty woman. Since, I lack of any other evidence and I'm not inspired or obligated to buy it... so to me that is what they are selling. At some point, the cover should accurately portray what the contents will be. If I want to look at fine art, I'll save that for a trip to a museum. The books look nice. For me there has to be at least a hint that theres a story I'll be interested in. After thumbing through quite a few of their books, I've yet to see a synopsis or motivation to jump in. I'm also not interested in collecting a new line of comics if I have to buy a variant of every issue to have a complete set. They need to convince me it's worthwhile first. cfs

Maybe "Hot babe" look is not the right choice of words but I think he meant that reference more in line with static poses than chicks on a cover. I dont think anyone thinks they dont have high production values. It always looks like they are using high quality paper and graphics. However, as cfs said, seeing covers with someone standing there is probably the biggest turn off. Even if they look cool. Even if you like some of them. How many times you going to see a cover with someone posing before you want an idea of what is inside? Like I said, my wife has a few of them and all the covers look like an album cover for pop stars. I think being old school hurts us (myself included) here. The stories may actually be really good. And maybe they really are. But, from the cover, you cant tell one from the rest. So, the compelling reason to purchase it for geezers like us, just isnt there. If you're into poster shots...your at the right place.

I don't think that's what he meant at all Gowaltrip. He has only looked at one title from the entire line and based his entire opinion from that. He should have looked more into the company before saying what he did.

I don't think that's what he meant at all Gowaltrip. He has only looked at one title from the entire line and based his entire opinion from that. He should have looked more into the company before saying what he did. He summed it up pretty accurately. I have looked at just about all their books even Dan Dare -- which has a campy title, so automatically that doesn't appeal to me. Snake Woman alone is enough for me to feel that they are more concerned about selling an image-- a pretty girl-- than they are promoting an interesting story. Nothing in their comics has appealed to me other than high showing off production standards. I don't even like the glossy paper and the flashy colors. I prefer things to be toned down for the most part. I prefer a more organic & simple look. I think it helps bring the elements of the story out more. The art looks nice, but art that is too shiny is just as distracting as bad art. It reminds me too much of Image Comics. cfs

If that's what you meant then that's what you should have said. "Hot babe look" sounds more like the whole bad girl era type stuff.
