I dont really see it as a big deal myself. Ive seen a few covers I might have called the "hot babe" look without being bad girl like Lady Death or stuff like that. I wouldnt categorize the whole company that way, but I think I knew what he was getting at. Maybe we can refer to it as the "Take my picture" cover look.

To me it's no different whether it's hot babes or no substance. It's hard enough trying to make a character relevant without just having these "take a picture" covers. At some point there has to be a reason to pick up a new comic over the thousands upon thousands of comics that are already published. At least when I see Archie, I have an idea of what to expect.

The covers are a weakness I grant you, but lately (on all sorts of message boards) I been increasingly rattled by posters making opinionated statements bearing little relation to fact. Further, expressing one strong opinion when meaning something else is never helpful to debate. Opinions are fine when we back them up, galling when we do not, which is why I may have come across as a bit snippy. So I am sorry if I did.
I have no issue when someone makes a sweeping statement they can back up and validate.
There is some good stuff amongst the Virgin line, but the art on some of the titles has been erratic at best. Which is where the covers suffer, since they are being produced by guys new to the American side of the medium.
For those interested I particularly recommend:
Snakewoman - very Vertigo-esque. 7 Brothers (vol. 1; my volume 2 is piling up to be read together)

Everyone has an opinion. From my experience, a lot of indy comics in the 90's would have very high quality art on the cover and very nice paper stock, but the interiors just didn't deliver. There are also a lot of publishers with variant after variant to boost print runs and I don't think the quality of the comics really warrant making the variants at all. Virgin comics are catchy looking. I'll credit them for inspiring me to pick one up and thumb through the pages. It concerns me that you think Snake-Woman is one of the better titles. Not because I think anything else is better, but because visually it comes across as the most shallow from a first impression. It's highly unlikely i'd ever pick any up at this point. It's not unlike Cross Gen. I never bought one of those until Abadazzad (sp?) and that was right before they went under. cfs

I stand by what I said. Snake Woman rotates out hot babe pictures. As far as I'm concerned they are selling A "HOT BABE" title. It's shallow, it's aimed at the groin, and anything over and above that won't raise them from the level they've stooped to. I'm not disputing anything. I'm simply stating my opinion. If they want to start putting average looking women professing quotes of Shakespeare on the cover then I'll call it something else. Am I making a sweeping generalization? Yes. I will continue to do that in almost everything I say. cfs

That is not what I would class as informed opinion to judge the content of the line. Your original point: No opinion. They interested me, but the catered towards a hot babe look and I've got enough of hat crap which I never read. cfs You state having no opinion, yet label them crap - and with no significant informed basis for your judgement. There is no need for further debate on this line with you, cfs, as far as I can see.

There is no need for further debate on this line with you, cfs, as far as I can see. I have looked at virtually everything Virgin has released. None of it excites me. Did I call it crap? No. I said they had high production values. That isn't calling it crap. The markerting is however very shallow. Does their product impress me? No. Am I making qualitative statements based upon what I see? Most definitely because I feel it is VERY POORLY MARKETED regardless of what story is evolving within the pages. I can look at Hummer on the road and know it's expensive and aimed at rich people. That doesn't mean I'm impressed when people waste their money on one. I'm perfectly able to start insulting the comics and picking them apart if you'd like a full quality review. That is what I get paid to do for a living. I make pretty good income doing it. Unfortunately I don't think they are worth the effort and I've had a day full of pinpointing flaws already. Catch me in a more energetic mood. cfs
