Monumental game changing moments in comics in my opinion are rare but when they happen, they typically change the way comics are made afterwords. Some moments I feel are worthy of that kind of distinction (but is in no way a complete list) are:
That is certainly not all of the moments. I'm sure I left many out that some of you would consider worthy and I would too. These are just a few examples that come easily to mind for me. The reason I made this thread however is I often complain both to myself and occasionally out loud that I don't feel there has been many or even any game changing events since Valiant. When i think about it, it seems I can think of a few that seem to be worthy such as the following....
Ebay becomes the new market place for buying and selling comics.
CGC finally becomes the official way of having comics graded.
I think those 2 events are worthy of "significant game changing" events. But those are not really in the comic form. Perhaps some would point to....
The Ultimate Lineup of comics by Marvel such as Ultimate Spider-Man #1 as significant. If you want to say that I guess you can, but I personally never cared for it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't qualify. Does it to you?
But help me here, I literally scratch my head wondering what has been significant comics wise since Valiant took comics by storm in the early 90s. Now 17 years since Valiant exploded, I continue to think that comics is long overdue for a major game changing event. Something to get comics hot again or at least something to make the entire comics world have a buzz.
Is there any events you would say qualify since Valiant? Or is there anything you feel is coming soon that would qualify once it gets here?
When I think about it, I just keep thinking its been too long and something else should have happened by now. What am I missing?
Superman in Action Comics (Which helps DC explode)
Showcase #4 (the rebirth of Superheroes and the start of the Silver-Age)
Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel and its awesome lineup of characters with continuing storylines and human problems begin)
Comic Conventions and Local Comic Stores gain momentum.
Chris Claremont/John Bryne X-Men scorch a run all the way through the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Batman becomes the gritty Dark Knight
Watchmen help comics be seen in Novel form.
Gimmick covers, variants and multiple covers become a double-edge sword but ultimately a lot of the same concepts still continue
Marvels hottest artist leave to form Image
Valiant takes comics by storm by focusing on comics having well written stories.
