I know this might sound silly to some. But, when I was a kid me and my friends would draw comic books in school. We each had our own characters and we would take like 10 sheets of plain printer paper and fold it in half and then make a comic out of it. A few times we made copies and sold them to other kids in school.
My character's name was Stingray (yeah, I know its taken). When I got out of high school, I decided I wanted to kill off my character and began working on a comic to do just that. Unfortunately, I only managed to do a couple of pages at a time and over the course of about a 12 year period, I finished only half the book and the paper is now in such poor condition and Im not all that happy with the art to begin with.
Im talking this time about doing something that I would take very seriously. I mean the real deal of going out and buying genuine comic pages and putting pencil to it and not moving onto the next panel until I am totally happy with the panel I am working on.
With my life full with work these days, this would probably take me a long time to complete if ever. But a huge part of me wants to draw a real comic I can be proud of before I die. Im in no means a great artist. I can draw. And if I give myself time and room and dont rush things, I can draw decently well. Its just my previous efforts, I never really took my time. Wanting to finish was more important than wanting a quality book. I want to reach well beyond that these days.
I also dont know if I want to use any of my made up characters and wonder if there is characters and scripts out there that I should use? Again, I want to do something totally serious and something that is likely to take me years to complete. But the beauty is, its something that I have literally the rest of my life to finish. I honestly want to pour my entire soul into each panel. I want to be completely satisfied with every panel I put into the book. And should I ever finish it, I would want to ink it and maybe have it computer colorized. Preferably by someone who knows how to do such a thing.
I know it sounds corny. I just want to challenge myself to do something like this. Its kind of a lifelong wish. Something I used to do as a kid is now something I seriously want to complete as an adult.
No, Im not looking to troll it around conventions and think Im going to break in or anything like that. I know I do not have the talent for such an endeavor. I just want something that I can feel proud of that I did. Something else to give me something to do during some of my rare spare times and when the mood hits. And also, it does help you relate to what the real artists go through. I already know personally that its a lot of work. Even for me to put out crap was a huge accomplishment.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Again, Im looking at years to complete it.
