Although I consider myself a headbanger at heart and as an aspiring bass player I can appreciate the pure shredding angst of adrenaline fist pumping music like this backed up with Anthrax's lead guitarist, I was expecting something rather good and crunchy, but irregardless, I still have to have a little bit of understanding of the singing itself. It has to be a bit more than primal growls and screams and undecipherable rapid fire words for me. Half the time I hear Death Metal like this, a lot of times I start off liking the shredding going on and then as soon as the lead singer speaks a word, I'm done with the song. While this guy here didn't make me have that reaction, he actually didn't offend me as badly as others, he did reinforce my position against pure Death Metal. Throw in a decent lead singer that can half way sing and this might be some good stuff. As it is, I'll grow sick of growling evil sounding hatred stuff pretty fast. I doubt I could have finished a 2nd song by these guys if the lead singer sang the same way. You're on the right track with this kind of stuff Wrecks, but there is such a thing to me as "Too Heavy".

Actually the guy singing this is the lead singer of Slipnot. And Sic is one of their songs. This was from the 25th Anniversary Concert awhile back. And on the dvd. And I agree with you on how some things can be 'Too Heavy' Like Deicide for example. Can't understand a damn thing he says.

I don't identify with people who just want to scream indecipherable noise to get attention. I want to hear a singer that can actually sing. It took me a long while to get used to Lemmy's voice in Motorhead, but even he has more singing ability that the bands who try to copy them or be just as heavy. df1

I'd rather hear Metallica play Motorhead. df1 I wish Metallica would just stop. They are over rated Az! I understand your feelings on this, but I personally can't take it that far. I go through big love/hate periods with Metallica. Their success has a lot to do with my hate side. I remember the days when you could never hear them on the radio or hardly ever see a video. That is when Metallica was cool. They were fresh and hadn't sold out......yet. Now they are like the 1st band that gets played whenever this genre needs to be played and you can think of so many others who are just as worthy but who you know never get 1 record played....ever. That's when I get sick of Metallica. I never thought I would be sick of hearing Metallica on the radio. But when I hear them, its always the same token songs and that drives me nuts too. So when I hear those same songs over and over, my mind is instantly like "Fuck Metallica! I'm sick of this shit!" and that is where I think I understand you. Because there is only so many times I can hear songs like Sanitarium. I'd be happier if I heard "Blackened" once in awhile. Or Leper Messiah. Instead I get to hear "One" for the 15,000th time. However, the bassist wannabee in me still sees the genius and how blessed they are as musicians. That no matter how rehashed and overplayed and redundant their music is, I still find myself having a hard time playing a lot of it and still find myself in awe at how tight they could be when they do it right. So although I understand the sick of them perspective you have and agree their best years are behind them. I can't totally get with the "overrated" part. 'Overplayed" would be more like it to me. And I also feel others deserve to share in their charmed limelight. They are simply those lucky bastards you have to hate because they've got it so good.

I love Slipnot; Waltrip you should actually give them a listen. Some of their songs are like this, but just as many are straight old school metal sounding. I actually drew the transformation pages of my comic while listening to slipnot. They are just a brutal band.
Now I don't really like Death Metal. I recently went to see Dream Theater in concert. (Awesome band IMO) They had 4 other groups with them one group who seemed to be really popular and are supposedly considered -progressive- was OPETH. That guys singing was axactly what waltrip was talking about. Musically they rocked until the guy opened his mouth.
Regarding Metallica; I get tired of hearing the old go to songs by them. But sometimes they will throw Damage Inc or Four Horseman or even Whiplash onto the radio. I can get behind that stuff. The new album, DEATH MAGNETIC is a fantastic album. Its right there with ...and justice for all. I dislike one song on it. The rest especially -My Apocolypse- kick ass.

Although I said earlier, their best days were behind them, I may need to refine it as "peak" days. I also have Death Magnetic and it surprisingly kicked ass. I think Metallica got away from what made them awesome and this is an album back into that direction. Although overall it rocks, it is a bit tamer and more mature than their heaviest thrashing years. It's a bit more polished. But the result is, it still kicks ass when so few bands are these days. This was my favorite album from them in the last 19 years.

I love Slipnot; Waltrip you should actually give them a listen. Some of their songs are like this, but just as many are straight old school metal sounding. I'm familiar with Slipknot, with songs like Duality and Wait and Bleed among others. I know who they are. The band itself is bone crunching and head splitting. They are very tight and gifted. The singer can flat out sing when he wants to and they have all the ingredients to being a band I could really get into. The problem I have with them is anytime I take a hard listen to them and pull up a playlist, its more like 7 out of 10 are just too damn death-metal-ish for me to take. And 2 of the 3 that arent, just don't appeal to me. When they appeal to commercial audiences instead of their background genre, they do nice radio playing songs that seem good enough to want to hear more. However, when I hear more, I just wish they were more commercialized and wish they would just leave their roots behind. In most cases, Slipknot is just too extreme for me.
