Now here's a moment who's time has come!!!! Although it ain't gonna change a damn thing.... Fans plan protest at Comic-Con against DC relaunchrobot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/06/fans-plan-protest-at-comic-con-against-dc-relaunch/A cadre of fans is organizing a walk at Comic-Con International in San Diego to protest the September relaunch of DC Comics’ superhero line. Planned for Saturday, July 23, the DC Original Protest Walk is intended to bring together disenchanted readers in a show of solidarity against the sweeping overhaul, which will see the release of 52 new No. 1 issues, as well as changes to the origins and appearances of many of the publisher’s characters. “Are you utterly baffled, disappointed and just ANGRY to see how DC ruins your favorite character’s design and wipes decades of comic history out of the mainstream universe?” reads a message on the event’s Facebook page. “Well, you’re not alone! And why not make some noise at the biggest pop-culture event this year, where creators, artists and writers appear in person — show them how fans – the fans of the classic characters, the (nevertheless slightly changing) designs, the character’s history and personality — really feel about it!” So far, 130 people have signaled they plan to attend the hour-long protest, which begins at 2 p.m.

Too few, too little, too late but even still, I applaud the principal. The few who actually ARE standing up are probably representing a very strong belief held by literally thousands of comic or former comic fans. I just don't understand how hard it is to understand the dwindling comic sales numbers as well as fans being vocal about their disgust that you don't realize what you're doing is wrong? Sure, there is going to be some reader-fanboy types who eat this shit up and see it as another "EVENT" But the rest are seeing it as another superficial shallow lame-brained excuse to launch something massive, call it great, get a quick buzz and have it mean nothing in the end but disenchantment with the leaders of the companies they grew up loving. The people in charge of these companies are inept. Happy Trade Paperbacking and Digital Comic surfing to what remains of the comic fans (oh let me scratch comic fans and replace it with what remains)....comic readers. The fandom is gone! You guys won!

Comic book companies aren't even seeking customer feedback which is part of the problem. The only feedback they are going by is the sales figures and they manipulate that with crossover events and variants. This new gimmick is essentially a non-event event. It isn't a crossover, but it affects every title across the board. I think they will eventually discover this was a big mistake on all fronts. There is nothing they could have done to give more readers a reason to quit buying all their titles. It is a jumping off point on the largest scale possible. What they need to do is stabilize their titles, offer consistency, and let the sales figures reflect customer investment in the stories so that sales feedback means something.
A guy I work with used to be a clerk at a comic book store. He does still help one day a week on weekends so that he can get a discount on the comics he buys. He actually thinks this restart is a good thing, but I've concluded the guy is an idiot. The chain he helps out moved one of their stores recently and he thought that was a good idea and that it would not affect sales at all. I rolled my eyes at his prediction. The store closed within 6 months of the move.

The number of things that the publishers need to do to move away from swindling sales and readership are far more than what the relaunch entails. I would love to be at a DC Nation event at a con so I could go to the mike and lay out all of their mistakes to them, in front of a live audiance so that they can see the reaction of the people that agree.

Chances are you would get a mixed reaction. Because believe it or not there are people who are really excited by this and a lot of people hate it. I think DC is going after the video game crowd (I mean the cover to the new Sgt. Rock book looks like something out of Call of Duty: Moderen Warfare 3) and the problem is that half or that crowd is already comic book fans and the rest they don't like comics and won't buy them.

Have you guys seen the new "Superman" look? It was posted on another board and it looked almost Goth in style. The traditional "S" logo was replaced. No classic red and blue outfit. Horrible!

I think that aspect of it almost bugs me more than any other part of it. I can almost grant you the restart. The renumbering from #1's. Although I'm one to not be on board with that as well. But lets not only reboot, but lets change the characters too. It's like saying "everything we had sucked and we no longer have confidence in it, so we're going to start over and change their uniforms and looks around so we can try and suit your desires". I think that bugs me more than the relaunch, renumbering itself. It just feels like a lack of confidence to me. 70 years of history restarted and repackaged.
Does anybody else remember New Coke???

The whole problem is that they think a big shake up pulls back in the curious collectors. It may have done it the first dozen times, but it's worn out now. People don't care anymore. they want something consistent and reliable.
Old coke never came back. We got Classic coke which is not the same as old coke.

DC lost half of the rights to Superman last month. They new it was coming and had to make changes.
I agree with Cyber that I would get a mixed reaction, but I would still say it. I don't mind the idea of a full relaunch, and I feel it is to early to tell what will happen, but there are interesting things happening.
for example, Thomas Wayne is Batman. Bruce was killed by joe Chill, and the Joker is Martha Wayne. It was revealed on Bleedingcool.com the other day.
