Sometimes I'm amazed how little it takes to get people to quit.
Last year it was being offended that people had a problem with Spider-Man being black.
This year is people had a problem with gays in comics.
I mean...Come on!
Do I need to start posting like Barney...?
Message boards are about debates.
It's board manipulation to play games like that.
Debate don't hate.

This year is people had a problem with gays in comics. I mean...Come on! Do I need to start posting like Barney...? Message boards are about debates. It's board manipulation to play games like that. Debate don't hate. Actually, I'd be more willing to say that I offended them. In all honesty, I'm sick of people walking some politically correct path laid out by complete strangers so they can feel all self righteous about themselves. It's a tad bit prissy in my opinion. Afterwards, they sit down to watch Southpark and laugh about how offensive it is. Why? Because it's a popular show and they can fit in by joining the flock. It's that weakness where people have a need to fit in and be accepted. Josh Adams joined my messageboard yesterday. I doubt he EVER makes even one post. Why? The default on a messageboard is to just lurk. I responded to his action on Twitter which is a comfort zone for him and he replied "I was just curious." That's why 95% of my board members joined my board. This past year, I've purged/deleted over 100 accounts on my board. It was people who are curious. Nothing wrong with that, but it isn't what makes a board work. It's better than nothing, but it takes more than that. Years ago my friends LOVED to talk about my messageboard and LOVED to hear me give the play by play. Not even one of them was willing to join. They saw me every week, so why log into a messageboard and restrain their ability to communicate? The flip side to that is that people are like sheep. If you lead them, they follow. If you startle them too much, they run. All these people who are so proud and haughty about their views, are just sheep like the rest of the world. I've probably offended them again. I have two words that I'd say to that, but I won't say them here. df1

Oh go ahead and say them here. You know I don't have a profanity filter.
I'm not trying to look like I'm having a whining post about traffic or anything. I've came to peace with the traffic on my board a long, long, time ago. A few years now. I've come to accept that trickling stuff here and there will be the norm for me. And in the meantime, I'll do what I can. I'm at peace with all of it.
But, it still irks me when seemingly regulars find an AGENDA to get offended by a TOPIC and run off because they had the opposing viewpoint. You're right. It IS PRISSY and Self RIGHTEOUS! It does give them something to be high and mighty about to look down on others and feel a part of a cause.
This is a comic messageboard. Except I don't particularly collect comics anymore and I have plenty to bitch about which I've been told irks others from time to time. And yes, I have been told by others that your viewpoints irritate others on here as well and all the ones I have heard that comment from are no longer semi-regulars. They are occasional passer-by-ers at best. No big whoop really.
But it does irritate me that people can't discuss a topic on a forum without getting all bent out of shape and running off in a huff when the board was about a topic you cared about in the 1st place and you were actively participating in.
Seems rather shallow to me. You've got a viewpoint you believe in? Tell your side. But to run off over it? Makes your viewpoint and you seem very weak. And if you don't like how its going? Find another topic on here to post in and leave that one alone.

Your comment seemed more like an observation, not whining. This exact stuff goes on in comic shops. Some customer walks in and expounds upon the virtues of Michaal Keeton as Batman. The "normal" clerk behind the counter doesn't want to hear the shit, wishes the customer would shut up, and looks at me to rescue them. I rattle off some offensive content because I don't care to hear the shit either. The customer shuts up, buys their comics and leaves. Afterwards the clerk thanks me for rescuing them and tells me I'm their favorite customer. That's the way it used to be when I bought comics. Most people who are offended by me quickly learn they aren't going to change me and I am entertaining.
Sometimes a heated discussion is merely a battle of wills. I'm arrogant, cocky, and I've dealt with far worse obstacles than simply a difference of opinions. I have a problem with people who merely wish to negate my opinion because if differs from their perception of reality.
I was to the point that I was ready to leave when I pissed your remaining members. I think that if I had left, you'd be in the same boat. It takes more non-lurkers to keep conversation going. 8 people isn't enough. You need more like 30.

Considering where I am now and where I've been for a long time, I'd be happy with 8 decent semi-regulars. And I would define that as someone who posted 2-4 times a month. Reason being, its rare all of them are posting at the same time. If you could get 2 people posting per week and rotating with others who come by once in awhile and post their couple of posts, I think that is enough traffic to at least sustain a conversation. Sure, even more is better. 30 members actively participating would feel like a total success. Its rare I see that these day except on the big boards that have been big for quite a long time. I haven't posted there in nearly a year but even Whet's board which used to have a great deal of semi-regulars seems nearly dead when I visit.
I think messageboards are past their prime. People want to deal with 1-2 sentences at a time like Facebook and Twitter. I'm getting to a point where I almost find Twitter more entertaining than Facebook and that would be a 1st for me. Facebook has been completely unexciting to me for a long time now. Twitter seems intimidating and takes awhile to get going but once you have it working, it can be a cool place to stop and check a lot of happenings quickly. I think everyone has gotten into this condensed way of talking. Its like no one wants to talk on a phone anymore. All they want to do is text.
In the end, I think this mentality is hurting message boards. Even good ones. People just don't have time for it anymore or the desire to want to chat with others on the same subject. I think its easier to feel a part of political and social beliefs elsewhere and they find it more fulfilling than chatting at length over subjects.
Not saying this is why I personally am slow. I've been slow forever. My board has its moments but its extremely fleeting. I'm just saying the general mentality of internet users just doesn't seem in tuned with frequenting message boards anymore. That almost seems so late 90s and early 2000's. I'm just saying as a consequence of the times, it makes it that much harder to have a successful board or climb to a point where you have 30 good regulars. Like I said, I'd be happy with the 8.

People want free entertainment. If you write a column for a blog now, It's like writing a novel ten years ago. Facebook has NEVER been entertaining to me. I think it's a safe bet that Facebook has already gone past it's prime. In 5 years it'll be the same as Myspace. Most people want the ability to connect with friends and family. They don't want everyone in their business 24 hours a day. Twitter is like instant access to people who have something to say. It's like a snack. Easy to digest. Easy to reply. Any company that gets dropped into my feed as an ads get marked as a spammer and blocked. I don't care if it's McDonalds. Your goals are modest and that's fine. The reality is that 8 people don't randomly feel motivated to reply at those intervals. The topics have to inspire a reply. If you tell me something I already know, my only reply is "I know." That doesn't drive conversation. People will occasionally ask me to tel them a joke. My mind will be blank. I'll say, "start talking". My girlfriend mention a leper in a conversation and I recall a joke. Q: What did the leper say to the prostitute? A: Keep the tip. Not a great joke, but talking about a subject inspires a response. People say to me "Where do you get all these jokes?" My reply is that I tell them. If you tell jokes, people will reply with one. Networks of jokes begin. On the flip side, me and one friend don't laugh at each others jokes. We grade them. I even have a joke about that. I can post hundreds of posts a day. If's like listening to elevator music. You ignore it and move on. Toss in a Van Halen song and conversation might follow. Mention "Don't Worry, Be Happy." and people will be grumbling over it. They'd rather hear elevator music they can ignore. df1

Just went through a week without internet except what I was able to see on my phone. Just got it back on today. Don't know how much longer I'll be able to keep things going. Things are looking pretty bleak on my end. For the time being, I'll enjoy have internet back and enjoy it for what it is worth for however long it is worth.
I've been learning to count my blessings no matter where they are and how small they are. A blessing is a blessing.

Any new job prospects? You seem to be holding up well under the stress. df1
