I had a DC key 2 day period just overwhelm me last weekend.
1st I lost Green Lantern #76 by mere moments and a few dollars. It stung like hell because for the condition it was priced way low and somebody more aggressive beat me on it. I was pissed I lowballed it.
Then I kept my eye on this solid looking Justice League #21, which was the 1st S.A. appearance of the JSA and I think the 1st mention of the term "Crisis". This book was solid and low priced and I was all set to bid on it when suddenly it started jumping out of my price range at the end. I didn't even bid. But the letdown on this one kind of made me sad. I didn't feel pissed like I did on Green Lantern, just sad that people were onto it.
Then I run into this Flash #123 just sitting there at an unbelievable price with like an hour to go. To make matters even better, I had purchased off this seller numerous times and he was always dead on accurate with his grading, so I was trusting what I was looking at. I kept looking at it and with a minute to go, the price hadn't changed. It was unbelievably low. I put in a VERY aggressive bid hoping I had learned my lesson from Green Lantern. I had just made the price double to make me the highest bidder but it was still less than half of my highest bid that I put in, so with roughly 20 seconds to go, I had the book for less than half guide and with tons of room from my maximum bid. With like 8 seconds left, someone put a bid for like $2 more. I almost laughed. It was like it wasn't aggressive at all. He did it so late that there was no time for that person to rebid. I clicked refresh again and I had won! Got the book for less half guide. Like I said, I started watching other auctions of this book and they all blew away my price. Even rags that looked honestly like shit blew away my price.
When I got the book, I thought it looked better than the picture he had posted. Yeah, its obviously worn. But no real major damage anywhere. Totally complete. Just a multitude of minor defects which in abundance makes it low grade. But overall, it was still a solid book. Really the worst of it is a bad spine roll. The rest is just an accumulation of minor defects. No major damage anywhere! A NM- 9.2 guides for $3700. True, I'm down in the 2.5 - 3.0 area, but I got a solid low grade copy for less than $50 (including shipping!). I just thought if I could get a key like this from a seller I trusted for a price like this....why the hell not???
It totally made up for my other 2 loses. It's not that often I get lucky on ebay, but I feel like I did this time.

You should really look through the Metropolis Comics listing to get a base idea of what not to exceed. If you can buy directly from Metropolis, then why get into a bidding war?

Awesome man. I have a Justice League #21 that I bought off of Gerald from Trilogy or Wayne from Zeno's one year in Pembroke. Its a pretty decent copy also.

"G" that Zoo funnies is a nice book. I wouldn't mind having it myself. I would really like that KEY Flash book also. I believe that book not only marks the first meeting of silver and golden aged Flash characters, but also the first Idea of a Multiverse. I have many old Green Lantern books. My oldest being Issue #15 most in very fine condition, Its one of the few DC titles I have bothered to collect large amounts of besides Justice League and the two main Batman titles. defient 1: Good Luck meeting Neal Adams. I just took part in a four day argument with his son Josh (a solid artist in his own right) who got mad at my assessment of a couple of Pro's. At the end though he called me a very prolific Artist. Which I feel is a nice compliment. He turned out to be a good enough guy also. Neal's got a pretty good family. Josh was the first one I saw. Bought his sketch book. Neal was busy, so I moved over to the other side of their booth and bought Neal's hardback, the San Diego variant of the "4 Adams'" Sketchbook, and Joel's sketchbook from Jason. Joel wasn't there. The next day I got Neal to sketch the girl I date for a couple of hundred dollars less than his going rate. No complaints at all. Was very disappointed in about three artists who scoffed even at Neal's discounted rate saying even it was too high. Jimmy Palmiotti being one. I think some of Neal's original art has been selling for 5 figures. I'm not going to complain about a few hundred dollars. It's also a very personal piece since the image is of someone I love dearly. No complaints at all. df1

I look at things enough and if I have time, I check things out fairly well before I bid. Like I said, pretty much every copy I seen since has went for more than mine, even if it looked a lot worse. The main reason I deal with auctions is that SOMETIMES, not always....but SOMETIMES you can snag something pretty decent cheaper than what you could get it for straight up from a retailer. Trust me, if the book had gotten much higher, I wouldn't have even bid. Thats what happened on the JSA #21. I knew I'd be paying too much if I bid on it, so I just watched it end without me. I'm never playing with much money when it comes to comics, so I know when to fold.

Can you show us the sketch Neal did for you?

I had Palmiotti as someone I followed on Twitter and he talked nothing but political bs so much and so often that I finally just had to drop him as someone I follow. I don't give a shit about a comic creators political views. just create comics. How you feel about world events just doesn't interest me.

The subtle features of her face that I adore don't show for me, but it is still pretty d**n close. No complaints. She's half Brazilian, so her perfect skin tones don't show. Here is Neal working on it... df1

Some people feel is their obligation to be socially conscious when they reach a position of influence. If I disagreed with them, I'd definitely drop their twitter feed. Overall though, I don't have a problem with it. People like Bono from U2 can definitely make fools of themselves. I had a bootleg recording of them live and Bono was rattling off against President Reagan right before the Berlin wall came down. Reagan wasn't perfect, but that was a huge accomplishment. But yes... first order of business is to do what made you prominent or all the social commentary does fall on deaf ears. df1

I don't look at Twitter much and at first I didn't mind it. But it got to be where every time I went to Twitter just to look, I was wading through his posts one after another about his feelings on things. Some things I agreed with, some I didn't. The problem I had, is he just kept going for days and days and days with the same shit. Not only that, out of ALL the creators I had selected to follow on Twitter, he was by FAR the one that Tweeted the most. There was hardly a page of Tweets I could look at without looking at 10 of his ramblings. After awhile, it was just getting in the way of reading what other people said. And being he was repeating his feelings over and over, it was getting downright annoying. When I finally turned him off, it was like I could finally see what everyone else was saying. Nothing against the man as a comic creator. Just wish I would have heard a few of his views on that instead of constantly trying to influence me to agree with him on shit I was trying to escape from.
