Another thing I want to bitch about is the overuse of multiple covers. It seems the comic industry hasn't never learned from the glut and greed of the 1990's. But I'll have to say, at least in the 1990's, there was some innovative concepts being tried to covers, now it's just multiple and multiple for no good reason.
Once again, a 1st issue, a special issue, some significant event, I can understand....but when every 2 or 3 issues have multiple covers, I don't get it. Unlike the 1990's, I seemed to have the money to go after the multiple covers when that happened. And looking back I feel foolish for doing it. But today, I don't have the money and I certainly don't have the time to research which books have what covers. Even Previews can't keep up. Very often an ad will say "Retailers please note: This title ships with multiple covers".
It's even worse when it is time for ordering. Unless you're getting a limited variant which has a smaller print run than the normal cover (another beef I might add), the covers that are done in equal amounts, you generally do not know which one you will get when you preorder. You just put down that you want one of the regular ones and somebody chooses for you. Inevitably, when you receive the book, you realize you didn't get the one you wanted and feel ripped off. Should you run out and pay another $4 for the one you wanted??? Hell no!
And what if you are the collector and the completest and you want to complete your collection. First, where are you going to research all the different versions of covers? Of all the resources available today, I find it probably extremely difficult at best to unearth the data necessary to know what is what and how many different versions there are. It's making collecting difficult when you want to be complete.
It's just gotten too far out of hand just like other things. It smacks of nothing more than greed. Hardly ever adds value to your collection and makes collecting difficult. And to be honest, it feels far more rampant than the 1990s and those days are looked back on with great disdain for retailers who tried to push this stuff out and make profits. There doesn't seem to be the cry now that this is overkill as it was back then. It's just a gimmick that 98% of the time, just isn't necessary.
As for the pro's, if you want choice, you've got it. More to choose from and maybe more likely you'll get a cover you like. Perhaps more income for all those involved. I'm sure there are others, but this doesn't seem like it will go very far when you see it everywhere.
I kinda prefer my comics to come out with one cover and maybe every once in awhile a moment might be worthy of multiple covers. Not every cover deserves at least 2. But that's just me.
